Engineered Fibers Technology, LLC (EFT) of Shelton, CT announced today the sale of their SpectracarbTM porous graphite GDL business unit to Giner ELX, Inc, Newton, MA. Spectracarb carbon / carbon gas diffusion electrodes and other Spectracarb products are used in fuel cells, electrolyzers and other electrochemical applications on a worldwide basis.

Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT) has been researching, developing, and manufacturing carbonaceous components on a laboratory and commercial scale for various electrochemical applications since 2005 when it acquired the Spectracarb business from Spectracorp, and is a leading materials supplier to domestic and international private industry, government laboratories, and universities. EFT offered the largest selection of porous carbon / carbon papers and thick panels available commercially and focused on the development and production of customer-specific materials.

EFT was founded in 1998 with a mission to provide unique engineered fibers, fiber-containing products, and engineering services to meet specialized technical requirements in short fiber composites, engineered materials, papers, pulp-molded products and nonwovens. EFT Managing Director Robert Evans stated, “The sale of our Spectracarb GDL business will permit greater focus on this growing market segment under Giner ELX ownership to better meet the needs of the electrochemical industry, while allowing EFT to focus on our growing fiber and nanofibrillated fiber businesses in wet-laid composites and engineered materials.”

Giner ELX was formed in April 2017 as a separate company from Giner Laboratories to specialize in large-scale hydrogen generation for renewable energy storage and other industrial applications. “The acquisition of the unique Spectracarb technology for thick panels adds to Giner ELX’s successful commercial PEM electrolysis business”, said Giner ELX CEO Andy Belt. “ELX offers the lowest cost and highest performance grid-level energy storage solutions on the market, and Spectracarb porous carbon / carbon panels are an essential part of our products.”

EFT and Giner ELX also jointly stated that the Spectracarb GDL product line will continue to be commercially available and that Caplinq Europe BV will continue to represent Spectracarb products in Europe. Also, there will be no changes in manufacturing partners, and EFT will continue to provide engineering services to assure a smooth transition of the Spectracarb business.
