Are you importing or producing more than 1 ton per year of a chemical substance within Europe? Then you are legally obliged by the European Union (EU) regulation called “REACH” to register that substance with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).
REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals.
Does paperwork give you a thrill? Stop lying: no one likes filling in forms. You can split the costs of REACH registrations with other companies and do a joint registration or you can go it alone. Either way, registering a chemical substance with ECHA is like filling-in a long, complicated, and drawn out form. For each unique chemical substance, a separate technical dossier needs to be created and submitted.
REACH Technical Dossier.
The technical dossier must include the name, labeling, uses, and classification of the chemical substance being registered. It must also include an assessment of human and environmental exposure and risk management studies, as well as a detailed description of its physicochemical and toxicological properties. And on top of the burden of collecting all of this data, you must submit it using a specific software supplied by the EU (IUCLID 5) and then submitted by the ECHA portal: REACH-IT. Only after all that is done do you get a REACH registration number. Here at CAPLINQ, we can take the burden of REACH registration off your shoulders. Let us handle REACH Registration for you.
Substances of Very High Concern: SVHC Compliance
One of the main objectives of the REACH regulation is to control and regulate especially dangerous chemicals. The European Chemical Agency keeps a growing list of all Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). If you have one or more of those chemical-nasties in your product then you must be able to identify it and disclose it to all users at each stage of the supply chain.
SVHC compliance depends on your ability to disclose the presence of SVHC’s within 45 days of being requested to do so. You are also obliged to test if your product contains more than 0.1% of its own weight in SVHC’s.
It’s important to note that this applies to all types of products. Most of SVHC testing services charge an hourly fee, but CAPLINQ charges a single fixed fee with no hidden charges. Our complete SVHC test price is $995, but we also offer to test for individual SVHC substances.
Restriction of Hazardous Substances: RoHS Compliance
RoHS, unlike REACH, is an EU directive rather than a regulation. Instead of applying to all chemical substances and all the products that contain them (like REACH), RoHS focuses on just 10 specific types of hazardous substances found in electronics.
These are Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). Each of these toxic substances has maximum levels set for their presence within any given substance contained in any electronic component or product.
RoHS applies to all household appliances; from remote controls to washing machines, as well as computers, consumer electronics, lighting, monitors, medical devices, toys and sports equipment, and semiconductor devices too. CAPLINQ offers RoHS testing and compliance services at fair prices.
As a specialty chemical supplier, CAPLINQ has a long history and literally tons of experience handling REACH registration, SVHC testing, and RoHS testing.
